These spiritual beliefs are strictly my own, and I am in no way implying
that you have to believe them to be a therianthrope. I am only
attempting to give you, the viewer, a better understanding of my
beliefs and a better understanding of my experience and knowledge of
therianthropy. This is why it is so interesting to learn about other
therians, because each have their own spiritual conduct that helps them
become closer to their animal. Again, therianthropy is a spiritual
journey that at this point, you must be interested in. These pages are
meant as a guide to those who want to know more about therianthropy
that I have learned of over the years. These pages are a reflection of
both my gained knowledge and personal beliefs. You need to look to
yourself for your personal therianthropy, if that is in fact why you
|Therianthropes in General
A Therianthrope is an individual with a unique spiritual connection with a member of another species. This spiritual connection is always present, and its subtleties are felt by the individual depending on the strength and awareness of the connection itself. These subleties can manifest themselves in different ways, most commonly mentally. The species of animal that a therianthrope is tied to is called a phenotype; sometimes referred to as a theriotype. Many community members have a multitude of phenotypes that pertain to themselves, and the number of connections that a therianthrope has is only limited by their awareness of them.
This being said, therianthropy is different for everybody. The unique traits a therian has spiritually are similar to those that we see between people. The spiritual incarnations of phenotypes can retain traits that normal members of the species would not or could not have. A wolf having blue eyes would be considered a hereditary anomaly if not just a severe rarity. However, since the animals in question are not members of the wild, but altered images of the soul means that they can appear quite differently from therian to therian. Strange colors, markings, size or shape do not resemble a living being, but another part of the therianthrope.
Some believe that to be a true therianthrope, the person needs to have a somewhat physical resemblance to their spirit animal. This is completely untrue. If you have black hair, your wolf doesn't need black fur. If you have blue eyes, your deer doesn't need to have them either. The phenotype is a reflection of another side of the human being. Some are aware of it, and some aren't, but the human doesn't need to reflect the animal.
Some also argue that the spirit is found deep in the mind. I do not believe that a person's spirit can be centered in the body's control center, but that it flows throughout freely. Yes I know that the mind itself is connected to the rest of the body by nerve circuits, but for all intensive purposes, I believe that the spirit of any living creature has to be separate from the mind. The spirit can be shaped by the mind to an extent, and every level of incarnation leaves its own imprint on the immortal soul. This is why some people believe they can feel repercussions and even memories from past lives. The experiences that a living creature feels, especially ones of intense change or emotional significance leave a trace of themselves on the very soul. Our very spirituality is shaped by experiences in our past lives and present one. The better we understand and embrace our spirituality, the closer we become to our physical and spiritual selves. The trick is to find the balance between the spiritual and physical.
Shifting has many different definitions because there are many different ways of acquiring a shift. Some believe shifting to be one or the other, but I will cover every form of shifting that I know of here.
Mental Shift- Mental shifts are very diverse, but they are usually the most common that a therianthrope will experience. A mental shift occurs when the waking mind changes from human to a more animalistic mentality. Basically, the mind adopts your spirituality's way of thinking. Mental shifts are usually mild and rarely result in aggressive behavior, though mental shifts have been known to occur in times of extreme stress. Mental shifts can be suppressed by the subconscious quite easily, so a voluntary shift requires time and focus, usually occurring through meditation or at random intervals.
Spiritual Shift- These act much like mental shifts, and are even sometimes confused with them. A spiritual shift happens when two spiritualities merge, such as your current human spirit and a past spirituality. Although an organism's spiritual energy is usually compressed into a single entity, therianthropes can experience spiritual shifts quite often because their human plane and animal plane are so close together. These shifts can become quite common in experienced therians, and can sometimes be a nuisance when not wanted.
Dream Shift- Very self explanatory. These occur in the resting mind during dreaming. I hope you understand what dreaming is anyway. These shifts can begin during a lucid dream, which is a dream when you are consciously aware that you are dreaming. Lucid dream shifting is wanted by nearly all therians, because it is a chance to become our spiritual being. If a therian like myself was to become aware that they were dreaming, flying would be second on the list of to-dos. Shifting into their spiritual animal is the first thing any therian thinks of. Of course dream shifting is not reality, but it is the closest thing to a real physical shift that many of us can experience.
Astral Shift- This is much like a dream shift, but with much more freedom and possibility. It is very difficult and requires a lengthy amount of time to perfect. Astral Projection is the act of leaving the physical body in the form of your spiritual body. The astral plane of existence looks much like the physical, but the bodies of the living are not seen, only the spirit. After leaving the physical body, the astral body can take the form of whatever your spirit pleases, and sometimes it will already be in the shape of your phenotype. As I said before, it is very difficult to accomplish a complete astral shift, and traveling in the astral plane is very unstable, and many of my own attempts have ended in me being pulled back to my body before I could leave my bedroom in human form. It is frustrating, and I applaud anyone who can accomplish it.
Phantom Shift- This can be a privilege or a major annoyance. Phantom shifting is when characteristics of a phenotype manifest themselves on the body, but are invisible to the living eye. When a limb is severed or amputated, the amputee sometimes swears that their limb feels like it is still there. This is the mind using years of muscle memory to send messages from the severed nerves. Similarly, your phenotype can send messages to your mind for limbs that do not exist. The most common characteristics associated with phantom shifts are fur, ears, and tails. Sitting on a phantom tail for the first time is certainly not pleasant.
Physical Shift- The most controversial form of shifting in the therian and were community. I personally believe that physically shifting from a human to an animal is a myth and cannot be replicated in reality. As much as I wish it were possible to become on the outside what I am on the inside, I just don't think it can be done. I am not going to go on a rant about how some people believe they can but have no proof. I don't want proof, I don't need proof, I am just not going to go down that path, and I discourage anyone else from doing so.
Personal Therianthropy: I feel that I have never
chosen to be a therian, but I have become this way by the choice of a
higher force. What this force is I have no idea, but it relates somehow
to my spirituality and I have always been searching for answers. I
began feeling this way around the age of ten, and luckily I had the
advantage of the internet at the time, which made things much easier. I
asked questions considered stupid by many communities and was
considered too young in many a place. Regardless I have come to be
where I am today by asking questions and staying close to friends and
family along the way, but especially close to my inner self. My first
shift was self induced because I could not rely on dream shifting at
the time. It began by a sort of spacing out in class, and before I knew
it I didn't feel like myself anymore. I could not see myself during the
shift, but the blanks were later filled in through meditation. I was in
a wood of some sort on a seemingly endless trail. To me, the trail was
my life, and I was going to follow it in the form I was given in spirit
and mind. I continue to think this way to this day. I get a feeling of
independence and unity when I realize how different my ideas and spirit
are from my peers and family. I remain submissive around them however
to keep a fine line between my personal life and outside life. I love
sports for the competition, and I believe it is in every beings nature
to feel that way to some extent. As far as school goes I am an honor
roll student going into high school. I play hockey and baseball for
school teams and am a captain for both. I continue to balance the bulk
of my conversing with weres and other therians online and the rest of my life away from
the ideas. I feel that my spirit can never be taken away, so it is
always with me no matter what I do. To many I am human, to me I have
more than just a body and mind, but an inner wolf as well.
I am always looking for conversation with fellow therians or people intrested in the topic. Contact me:
